What are Page Titles?

Page Titles or “Title Tags” are those large hyperlinks that appear in the search results after you search something in Google, or other search engine.  They are used to describe the content of each page.

Page Titles are one of the main SEO (search engine optimization) ranking factors Google uses to determine where web pages appear in the SERPs (search engine results pages).

I’m going to preface this by saying this is an article of the basic SEO (search engine optimization) variety.  I don’t really mention advanced SEO tactics, so if you’re above the Beginner SEO level, then you probably won’t learn anything new here… although sometimes articles like this are a nice refresher.

I’d like to talk about the work I did (I guess this is sort of a case study) on one small business site very recently.  With one day’s worth of work, I saw an immediate increase of 82% in Organic Traffic and 50% increase in impressions.  This is a demonstration of the power of On-Page SEO and just how quickly you can see results, especially for a site that had never truly been optimized.

When you’re in the preliminary stages of building a new website or re-building an existing site, one step that often doesn’t get the attention it deserves is the site structure.  When I say “site structure”, I’m referring to the categorization of your site, and the naming structure of those categories.

Oftentimes, there is more focus on the design itself rather than the structure of the pages.  While the aesthetics of the site are very important, this would be like furnishing a house and choosing your wallpaper before deciding how many rooms you were going to have built.
